About my tutoring

My name is Nancy Caffey.  I am a Master Tutor working with students of all ages, and I welcome you to my web site.

A little background information about Caffey Tutoring.  I started tutoring because my oldest child has dyslexia.  My other son had difficulty with standardized testing, and all three of my children have varying degrees of ADHD.  I had a very personal investment in helping kids succeed when I first became involved in tutoring, and I continue to tutor because I love empowering students, helping them find confidence in their academic endeavors, and I thoroughly enjoy sharing my love of learning.

I have a Master’s degree from Berkeley and a career in Architecture, and bring problem solving skills from my experience in that field to my work with students.  I trained and worked with the Kingsbury Center and started my own tutoring practice a little over 10 years ago.  I work with students of all ages in all subjects, and I have a specialty in coaching students for standardized testing like the SAT, ACT, PSAT, SSAT, ISEE, and GRE.

I tutor in just about all subjects and consider organization and study skills a fundamental part of what I do.  I am not merely a “homework helper,” but I usually use current classwork and assignments as a point of departure for teaching more fundamental educational concepts. I also have a specialty in coaching students for standardized testing.  I’ve taught students from so many schools in the DC area.  Most of my students are either referred by families I have worked with or by school guidance counselors and administrators.

I charge for each tutoring session, and request payment either in advance (usually for each month) or at the beginning of each session.  Cancellations need to be made by 9 am on the day that tutoring is scheduled; otherwise we charge the family for the missed session.  All my students have regular times that they meet with me (between one and three sessions per week), but I try to be as flexible as I can to accommodate changes as the need arises.  All the families I work with are terrific about switching times if they can when it means helping out another student who is in immediate need of tutoring.  This doesn’t happen very often, but when it does it’s wonderful to see how everyone rises to the occasion to help others.

Contact me if you have a child who might benefit from tutoring, and if I can answer any questions.
